Background

Melinda Rosario grew up on Earth, in Rio De Janerio. However, her life was no Carnivale. She was a Starfleet brat, both her parents members of different branches of Starfleet stationed on Earth. Her father, Lt. Juan Rosario, was a security officer, and hoped one day to become the security chief aboard a starship. Stationed on Earth, he sought mainly to protect the home front, and watch over the Federation's many diplomats residing on Earth. Melinda's mother was Lt.(j,g.) Wendy Baker. She was a Doctor who ended up treating Juan one day, and fell in love in the hospital. They were blessed with their first child only a year after they were married.

Melinda had the full advantage of the finest education, warm environment, sunny days, and peaceful existence. Earth was a wonderful place to raise a child, and Wendy raised Melinda as much as she could. However, both parents having jobs that kept them at specific duties meant that Melinda was more often than not in day care or with a sitter, rather than with her parents. Melinda started growing up when she was 5. After many months living in a community in Brazil, her father and mother arranged for their first scientific mission together. They would be serving on the U.S.S. Beakman on an exploratory mission near the Romulan Neutral Zone. Melinda was brought along, to be cared for by a full staff on board the ship.

In her early formative years, Melinda had very little time to actually experience life with her parents. So her time was spend mostly on her own or playing with the other children. From an early age, Melinda had a love for building and working with her hands. The teachers that spend most of their time taking care of her noticed this, and encouraged Melinda to continue working on projects that would utilize her talents. Not necessarily art, but crafts were the specialty. Making something out of nothing was becoming a fun habit. Teachers began to plug Melinda into classes that focused on the inner workings of devices and apparatus. Soon Melinda was making toys out of spare parts, and quickly. She had a natural aptitude for it, and the teachers noticed that Melinda was perfect once she was shown how to make something. Her reputation for having a photographic memory, and parents with good careers, the future looked bright for her to attend the Starfleet Academy.

It was about that time that tragedy struck. Melinda was left on Earth to attend school. However both her parents were on a ship sent into the Dominion War. The ship was badly damaged in the attack, and several people lost their lives. Among them was Dr. Wendy Baker. Juan was inconsolable, and was left with the task of trying to tell his daughter that her mother had passed on. Juan could barely bring himself to do it. After the funeral, Juan was given a chance to stay and deal with his grief, but instead, he took an assignment on a long mission. Fleeing from his pain, he set out for a distant part of the Alpha Quadrant. Melinda has barely heard from him since then.

Alone, truly alone, she threw herself into her studies. Isolating herself further from other people, it became all about the technology that needed repair, the systems that needed to be restored. For years, Melinda Rosario worked her way through the school and aptitude tests to make it to the Engineering Corps. Her terrible habit of staying up and working in low light conditions did terrible things to her eyes, but she kept that a secret, never taking the time to have it repaired. In fact she barely did much more than read, and it showed. Her body is rail thin. She was healthy yes, but her muscle tone is nowhere near that of a Security Officer. She small, slight, but very intelligent.

It was this time that Melinda finally started building her shell. Her interpersonal skills were weak. She wasn't a commander, or a diplomat. She was a grease monkey and actually loved the job. In her first assignment on board Station 3-4-8, the engineering crew began to rely on Melinda more and more, mainly for her Photographic Memory. She began learning tricks of the trade, picking up PADD after PADD of engineering information, trying to keep on top of the latest developments, and pressing forward with experimenting in the different aspects of the Corps. However, after her mother's death, she started to exhibit signs of Xenophobia, and the grew greater and greater over time. Soon her words were rare, carefully chose, and only spoken to the most humanoid of partners. While never doing anything that has earned her a reprimand, she has also never endeared herself to any crew.

Melinda found herself making repairs to damaged warships. It was fortunate for her she had excellent teachers, the chief engineers on board the station. They gave Melinda many tasks to accomplish in the different fields of engineering. Not only the hard core aspects, but labor intensive work, on repairs, and construction. She worked the ships over, taking the time to learn the basics of ship design which became a field she would love to be involved in.

In addition to learning the ins and outs of ship design, she was also learning the basics of mechanics and systems. She was reading basic manuals and found that there were alternative methods of propulsion. Ancient forms of mechanical engineering long since gone by. Melinda's isolatory nature left her creating small gadgets in her quarters, which one day she might parlay into robotics. Her aptitudes did not go unnoticed by her commanders, who found her to be rather quiet and withdrawn, but excellent at the tasks they put before her. Such expectations weighed heavily upon her.

Moved onto to her first starship, she was given a variety of options following the regatta that occurred. With crews needing repositioning, Melinda took a look at the manifest, and shook with fear. The list was massive. However, the bright spot in it all is she could hide there, get away from all the expectations. Her work had been remarkable, but her connection to people was never there. She was granted the assignment, in the hopes that starting over again would give her a chance to live her life as quietly as possible without arousing…expectations. Just like her father, she would take to the stars and hide. Away from as much as possible. And while concerns linger about her phobias, she does make herself a useful member of the team.

Goals

Melinda has three pressing goals that motivate her life.

  1. She wants to someday be a ship designer, so she studies hard all types of ship structures and systems.
  2. She would like to move up the ranks to be a chief engineer someday, proving that she has what it takes to do all the work in the place. She doesn't want the command to be in charge however, and she often forgets that.
  3. She would love to reunite with her father. However, a lack of communication and time has made finding him a near impossibility.
